The Pudding

Visual essays on culture, internet, sports, and language — by a small team of journalist-engineers.

About

The Pudding makes visual essays — long, interactive, data-driven stories on culture, internet life, music, sports, and language. Each piece is reported, designed, coded, and shipped by a small team of journalist-engineers who built the whole publication around the idea that some stories simply can’t be told in prose.

Famous pieces include the rap vocabulary analysis ranking hip-hop artists by unique words used, the deep dive into how pop lyrics have gotten more repetitive over decades, the visualization of what makes a film “boring,” and the interactive on how internet slang spreads geographically.

Everything they publish is free, ad-light, and feels handmade. They publish slowly — usually one big piece a month — and that pace is exactly right. There’s no other publication on the internet quite like it.
